A Fresh New View: My Window Transformation with The Shade Store

There’s something about windows that can truly transform a home. They’re the eyes of a space—inviting in light, framing the outside world, and setting the mood for everything that happens within. Recently, I had the chance to partner with The Shade Store on a project that completely reimagined my loft. The result? A home that feels refreshed, elevated, and more “me” than ever before.

From the very first design consultation to the final installation, the process was seamless, thoughtful, and incredibly exciting. I loved being able to share glimpses of the journey—from opening those carefully packaged Holland & Sherry fabric swatches at my kitchen table, to stepping into the gorgeous showroom in Dumbo (just around the corner from me), to seeing my vision finally come to life. Every detail was carefully considered, and the Shade Store team truly brought my dream to reality with such precision and professionalism.

Designing with Intention

When I began this project, my vision was clear: I wanted a home that felt clean and elegant, yet still inviting and cozy. My loft already has incredible light, but I wanted to make my windows stand out as focal points, not just background elements. The goal was to enhance the natural beauty of my space while creating a sense of softness and warmth.

That’s where the drapery came in. I chose luxurious blackout drapery crafted from Holland & Sherry Andes wool in the shade Rye. The fabric is impossibly soft to the touch, and the color is one of those perfect neutrals that’s difficult to describe—it’s not too dark, not too light, but sits in that sweet spot where it makes a statement without overwhelming the room. In the ripple fold style, it has this flowing, architectural quality that feels modern yet timeless.

A Romantic Glow

For my bedroom, I couldn’t resist adding linen sheer drapery in the shade Natural. These pieces completely transformed the mood of the space. There’s nothing quite like the way sheer fabric catches the morning light or diffuses the golden glow of sunset. The effect is soft, romantic, and calming—exactly what I want when winding down at night or easing into the day.

I’ve found myself slowing down just to watch the way the light moves across the fabric throughout the day. It’s such a simple joy, but one that makes my bedroom feel like a sanctuary.

Practical Meets Beautiful

Of course, living in New York comes with its own set of practical considerations. Roller shades aren’t a luxury here—they’re a necessity. Privacy, light control, and functionality are key, but I didn’t want to sacrifice beauty for utility.

I went with blackout roller shades in Sand for when I need complete darkness (a must for city living), as well as sheer roller shades that filter light beautifully while still allowing me to enjoy the skyline at night. Choosing the soft, sandy tone rather than a typical stark white or gray made all the difference. It gives the shades a unique warmth that complements the rest of my decor and feels intentional, not like an afterthought.

Now, these are some of my favorite corners of the loft—the spots where I curl up with a book or simply gaze out at the water. The shades and drapery don’t just frame the view; they enhance it, creating a perfect balance of light, privacy, and atmosphere.

The Beauty of Details

What impressed me most throughout this process was how much the little details mattered. From the measurements to the hardware, everything was tailored to fit my loft perfectly. That kind of precision makes such a difference, because window treatments are not just about fabric or shades—they’re about proportion, flow, and functionality.

The Shade Store team was meticulous, making sure every corner, every fold, and every installation felt flawless. The result isn’t just beautiful; it feels like a natural extension of my home, as though it was always meant to be this way.

A Home Transformed

Now that the installation is complete, I can honestly say I love my windows more than ever. They’ve gone from being a structural necessity to becoming some of the most beautiful focal points in my home. Each room feels brighter, more polished, and infinitely cozier.

It’s amazing how much of a difference something as “simple” as new drapery and shades can make. They bring personality, warmth, and intention to a space in a way that furniture alone never could. My loft feels refreshed, yet still deeply personal—a place that reflects my taste while remaining comfortable and livable.

Final Thoughts

This project reminded me that investing in thoughtful design is always worth it. Window treatments may seem like small details compared to furniture or art, but they can change the way a home feels in the most profound way. For me, they’ve turned everyday moments—like reading by the window, waking up to sunlight, or watching the skyline at night—into experiences that feel elevated and special.

If there’s one takeaway from this journey, it’s that beauty and functionality don’t have to be at odds. With the right fabrics, colors, and guidance, you can have both. And when you do, it transforms not just your space, but the way you live in it.
